SA trade and magnetite push gains momentum with new strategy and global benchmark study

The South Australian Government has sharpened its focus on mining investment and global positioning with the release of a new Trade and Investment Strategy to 2030, launched today alongside a landmark global magnetite comparison study.

Unveiled by Premier Peter Malinauskas, the Strategy aims to align cross-government priorities and boost the state’s share of national exports, with mining identified as a key sector. The announcement coincides with the publication of a magnetite resource benchmarking report commissioned by the Geological Survey of South Australia and authored by Amira Global in collaboration with CSIRO.

The South Australian Magnetite Global Comparison Study evaluates the state’s magnetite ore resources in the context of 198 deposits from major mining jurisdictions including Australia, North America, South America, Africa, and Europe. With 19.6 billion tonnes of JORC-compliant magnetite, including 8.3 billion tonnes of Economic Demonstrated Resources, South Australia holds significant potential, particularly as demand for high-grade iron ore continues to rise.

The new database and report are available through the Department for Energy and Mining’s Magnetite South Australia webpage and are expected to be used by policymakers, exploration companies, and potential investors to shape decisions and development priorities.

The 2030 Strategy released today outlines a coordinated framework to attract investment and foster industry growth. Investment opportunities in minerals projects are now being actively promoted via the InvestSA platform. According to AMEC, further clarity on specific action plans for the mineral and energy sectors will be discussed with the InvestSA team in coming weeks.

Meanwhile, South Australia’s minerals sector is also gearing up for a busy calendar of events. Highlights include:

  • TACTIC Conference (Port Augusta, 29–30 July)

  • RESA Skills and Workforce Summit (6 August)

  • Copper to the World (Adelaide, 26–27 August)
